We All Share the Road
Coursing Batch is only a relatively short stretch of road, but for those who live here it is part of everyday life.
It is a place where people walk, cycle, cross the road, leave their driveways, welcome visitors and go about their daily routines. This campaign is not about preaching or telling people how to drive. It is about encouraging all of us to be mindful of one another whenever we get behind the wheel.
Whether we are residents, commuters, delivery drivers, visitors or local businesses, we all have a shared responsibility to help keep the road safe. Good driving is about patience, courtesy, awareness and respect. It means recognising that everyone has the same right to feel safe.
Every Incident Is One Too Many
Behind every reported incident is a resident, visitor or road user whose day has been affected. Our campaign is not based on one isolated event, but on concerns reported by local people over many years.
Collisions, near misses, vehicles mounting kerbs, narrow pavements being obstructed and excessive speed all reinforce the need to keep working together. Every improvement that helps prevent a future incident is a positive step.
The best accident is the one that never happens.
Helping People Feel Safe to Walk and Cycle
Children, older residents, cyclists and dog walkers can feel uncomfortable or intimidated using Coursing Batch.
Some people choose not to walk along the narrow footpaths or cycle through the area because they do not feel safe. Journeys that could be made on foot or by bicycle are then made by car instead.
That is a loss for everyone. It reduces opportunities for exercise and independence, adds more vehicles to the road and has an unnecessary environmental impact through extra traffic and emissions.
It also affects the many thousands of visitors who come to Glastonbury. Tourism is essential to our local economy, and many visitors enjoy exploring the town and surrounding area on foot or by bicycle. A calmer, safer road helps create a more welcoming experience for them while supporting local businesses.
Making a Difference Together
Road safety is not achieved through signs, road markings or enforcement alone. It comes from thousands of small decisions made by ordinary people every day.
By respecting one another, reducing speed, being prepared to compromise and showing a little extra patience, we can make Coursing Batch safer, quieter and more welcoming for everybody.
